My Journey of Standing for Truth in Science
At Sparks of Sonshine, I’m passionate about equipping kids to stand boldly in truth, ask hard questions, and grow curious about God’s world. But that passion didn’t come out of nowhere—it was forged through personal experiences in classrooms where truth was often challenged.
From middle school debates to college-level pushback, I’ve seen firsthand what it means to speak truth with grace—and how important it is to prepare kids for the world’s tough questions.
Here’s a glimpse into my journey of standing for truth in science.
A Spark at Church
Before those school debates ever began, something happened at my church that lit a fire in me. A Creation Scientist came to speak for an entire week. I was completely captivated.
I begged my parents to buy the books he brought—and they did. I read every single one, cover to cover. That week opened my eyes to a whole new way of seeing science: not as something separate from faith, but as something that pointed back to our Creator.
That experience planted the seeds that would grow into my passion for defending Biblical truth—and gave me a foundation that I’d carry into the classroom.
Junior High Lunchtime
In 7th and 8th grade, when other kids were chatting about pop stars or trading snacks, I was deep in lunchtime debates with my friend and locker mate. The topic? Creation vs. Evolution.
She’d bring her arguments, and I’d go home, research, and return the next day ready to counter them. It wasn’t about “winning”—it was about understanding what I believed and why.
Sometimes, other students would sit with us just to listen in on our conversations, which made me even more committed to making sure I had my facts straight. At a young age, I was learning to think critically, stand respectfully, and speak up for my faith. That back-and-forth taught me how to stay rooted in truth while listening and responding thoughtfully.
Those lunch debates lit the spark that would later grow into Sparks of Sonshine—because our kids need more than just the right answers. They need the tools to speak with wisdom and confidence. The need to be able to stand for truth in science and every area of their lives.
Zoology Textbook
Fast forward to 10th grade. I opened my brand-new Zoology textbook and happened to glance at the copyright page. One line jumped out at me:
"Evolution will be presented as fact."
That struck me. I didn’t believe evolution was the full story—and I wasn’t okay with staying silent. So, I talked to my teacher.
We made a deal: I’d do all the assignments. I wouldn’t skip the material. But when he assigned a paper on evolution, I wrote mine on Evolution vs. Creation—and made it longer than required. On tests, I circled the textbook’s answer and then wrote in my beliefs alongside it. I was standing for truth in science, but it wasn’t the easy route.
To my surprise, my teacher respected me. I wasn’t trying to get out of the work—I was just refusing to write something I believed was untrue. That experience reminded me: truth can be spoken respectfully and still be powerful.
Speaking Up in Physics
I attended a Christian university where professors were expected to integrate faith into their lessons. I’d seen it happen beautifully—like my calculus professor, who used the concept of infinity to teach about the eternal nature of God. It helped me understand both subjects better.
But my physics professor? Not so much.
The day a Creation Scientist spoke in chapel, I was inspired anew. But when I walked into physics class afterward, my professor was already red-faced and flaming mad—even before I said a word. He ranted about how such "garbage" had been allowed on campus. I was stunned.
Already the only female in the class, I knew he didn’t like me. He made that clear—hovering over me during tests and making odd noises to shake my confidence. But that day, I decided to speak up and stand for truth.
I began respectfully debating him, countering his points—and to his shock, I could stand my ground. Finally, I asked:
"If you don’t agree with the school’s values, why are you teaching here?"
He let us out early that day.
It was one of those defining moments. Not because I “won,” but because I stood firm, respectfully, when truth was being mocked. That’s the kind of confidence and clarity I want every child to have.
Why Standing Up for Truth in Science Still Matters
These moments shaped the heart behind Sparks of Sonshine. They remind me why we create Bible-based escape rooms and faith + science activities: not just to entertain, but to prepare kids to stand for truth in science.
Truth isn’t just under attack today—it’s being redefined. Kids are growing up in a culture where everyone is told to "live your truth," and absolute truth is often dismissed as outdated or intolerant. It’s no wonder so many young people are confused about what to believe.
That’s why our job isn’t just to tell them the truth—it’s to teach them where to find it. To guide them to God’s Word as the unchanging source of wisdom and clarity. To help them develop the discernment to spot untruth, the courage to speak up, and the humility to do it with grace.
Our children will face hard questions. They’ll meet people who challenge their beliefs. And they need more than head knowledge—they need conviction, confidence, and the skills to seek truth in a world that keeps shifting.
That’s what we’re about: Rooted in Truth. Growing in Curiosity.. They remind me why we create Bible-based escape rooms and faith + science activities: not just to entertain—but to prepare.
Our children will face hard questions. They’ll meet people who disagree. And they need more than head knowledge—they need conviction, discernment, and the courage to speak the truth in love.
